This is an early, (pre-November 1936), black silk construction cap tally with machine woven Gothic script, "Kreuzer Koln", in gilt flat-wire threads. This light cruiser was named for the city of Cologne in western Germany. The tally is constructed of golden machine embroidery on a black silk backer; measuring 58.5" (148.5 cm) by 1.25" (3.1 cm). This is a Wehrmacht Heer Afrikakorps Oberschutze's Rank Pip (Wehrmacht Heer Armelabzeichen Oberschutzenstern Afrikakorps Ausfuhrung fur den Mantel, maschinengestickt auf Filztuch). The Wehrmacht Heer introduced a new system on September 25th 1936 that included the Oberschutze sleeve rank pip. This pip is the second pattern (1936), later issue (circa 1940) for the tropics. The rank insignia consists of a roughly 55 mm diameter, Afrikakorps dark tan wool with a central, machine embroidered, rank pip in silvery/gray rayon threads. The reverse is covered in tan gauze. This is the early insignia consists of a roughly 60 mm diameter on Afrikakorps feldgrau badge cloth base with machine-embroidered crossed rifles in heavy, golden/yellow threads. The NCO border indicates that it was issued to Waffenunteroffizier/Sergeants. The reverse is uncovered with no markings.
