This is an extremely well preserved set of Turkistan Legion EM volunteer's (Freiwilliger) shoulder straps; introduced in May of 1943. The wide straps (similar in width and appearance to old Russian style shoulder straps), constructed of dark bluish-green wool, with light blue rayon "Waffenfarbe" piping (indicating Turkestan Legion). The bottom sections of the straps are constructed of coarse brownish wool, while the retaining tongues are made of tan rayon/wool bland, and stitched together, They measure 107 mm by 58 mm. This is an early, (pre-November 1936), black silk construction cap tally with machine woven Gothic script, "Kreuzer Karlsruhe," in gilt flat-wire threads. This light cruiser was named for the city of Karlsruhe in south-western Germany. The tally is constructed of golden thread machine embroidery on a black silk backer; measuring approximately 59" (149.86 cm) by 1.25" (3.1 cm). There are some white spots where it looks to have been removed from an album. However, they are not sticky. There is also some wear due to age and handling, but remains in fine condition. Like the SS, they disposed of anything that would identify them as army police security troops. Despised by every soldier who ever saw another comrade strung up without trial, and a cardboard sign around the neck reading "I am a coward and a traitor". They all became a potential target for every armed soldier when chaos set in, and anything could happen at any time. No doubt many were executed on the spot when found among soldiers.
