Johannes "Macky" Steinhoff (15 September 1913 - 21 February 1994) was a Luftwaffe fighter ace during World War II, German general, and NATO official. He was one of very few Luftwaffe pilots who survived to fly operationally through the whole of the war period 1939-45 until he was severely burned during a failed take-off. Steinhoff was also one of the highest-scoring pilots with 176 victories, and one of the first to fly the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter in combat as a member of the Jagdverband 44 squadron led by Adolf Galland. Steinhoff was decorated with the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, and later received the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and several foreign awards including the American Legion of Merit and the French Legion of Honor. He played a role in the so-called Fighter Pilots' Revolt late in the war, when several senior air force officers confron

Absolutely original WW2 artifact.
I acquired this M-38 on a basement shelf a few years ago.
I found these old photos and re-edited and enhanced them, a couple weeks ago.

When I eventually turned it over. all sorts of dust and accumulated loose grime fell out.
The fourth picture is how I found sitting on its top. I brought it home and having blown most of the dust off , got this untouched picture.
The rest of these pics show various details as I carefully tried to capture various aspects (I have many other pictures now.)

For your consideration, a Spanish Cross of the Dead for the 315 volunteers that didn't make it back from Spain. This one awarded to the family of Bernhard Busch on 9-15-1939. Seldom encountered, especially with the document to accompany it. I picked this up from a small dealer in Walnut Creek CA in 1979. Only one I have seen. I do have another medal that I will be posting later. The frame is not original to the piece.
For your consideration, an achievement award from the Luftwaffe in it's case of issue. Case and table medallion in good condition. The Reichsmarshall looks quite serious in his pose. No markings on the medallion.
This is an autographed picture and IC 1 from a paratrooper that saw it all. Erich Schuster, with a picture 4 X 6 and his autograph on it. In the upper left hand corner is his IC1, a screwback with the notation L43683 Munchen 2 (Feldpost number?) He served in Belgium, Crete, Leningrad and Tunisia. He was awarded this medal on May 13, 1940 and received the RK on August 21, 1941. He was killed in Tunisia on January 11, 1943 and promoted to Oberleutant at that time.
Wonderful piece of history. The medal is uncleaned and been with the picture for many years. I have owned it since the 90's and enjoyed it as it has been a centerpiece of my collection. I know you will enjoy it too. I have many items, drop me a line to see what treasures might fit into your chest.
